Every year, Mike gets the itch to do some kind of project. Last February, it was fixing the bathrooms. This year, it was beds. With the new baby coming, we needed to move Avery out of the crib. Bailey was also in dire need of a bed as she was still sleeping in a toddler bed.
We got the plans from
http://ana-white.com. The bed we chose was the simple bed. It
was pretty simple, but also very very time consuming. It took us three months from pine boards to finished beds. The building of it didn't take too long, once Mike had the right tools, it was the painting and finishing.
After hours of sanding, painting, distressing, and polycrylicing, we were finally done! Well, almost done. We had a little hiccup putting them together, because after all, nothing can be as easy as it should be. We also didn't talk into account how the head board and foot board have a little over hang so that we can't push the bed all the way against the wall. So, there is a child size gap between the bed and the wall. We fixed that problem by stuffing big pillows/animals against the wall. All and all, I'm really happy with how they turned out.
The girls love them. They both cried when we took down their old beds, and I was really worried about Avery. She really doesn't like change. I took the girls to Target to pick out new sheets to help ease the change. On the big day, to my surprise, she told us she wanted to move rooms too. And once the beds were built and her new sheets were on the bed, she never mentioned the crib at all.
Apparently she loved her sheets so much, she decided to really make them her own:
I was putting her down for quiet time when I noticed the cuts all the way down her sheets. She had cut them!! I was/am so mad! They are only a week old, and already she has destroyed them. She took her scissors and cut holes all the way down the length of the sheet. I am not a seamstress, and I'm not even sure that they can be fixed.
Since we finished this project, I have all kinds of projects I want us to do. Maybe Mike and I will get a headboard too. But probably not. I think we both need a break from painting.

Cool I like them. I love Ana White she has some awesome ideas!! I can't believe Avery what a little stinker! I totally hear you on the paint. We have been painting so much since we moved here!!
fixable, not perfect, but fixable so that they are usable. You want to fuse interfacing to the back of the cuts (fusing them together) and then a close zigzag over the cuts.
These look amazing. I'm incredibly impressed. Well done Mike!
So I just read a little more carefully and - I am so upset for you Kari about the sheets! That kind of stuff ruins my week. Norah just wiped chocolate on one of our upholstered chairs that I don't know how to clean (because I can't use anything with water?!). Totally feel for you.
Good Job! :) Sounds like a lot of work! lol. And I feel ya on the sheets thing....Noah took a brand new church shirt out of the package a couple months ago, and drew a smiley face on it with dry erase marker...I tried EVERYTHING to get it out of his shirt...he hadn't even worn it yet...it never came out, and he has had to wear his smiley face shirt to church. :P
Man, you guys are crafty!
