A mere six months after another leak ruined our upstairs bathroom, we are finally getting around to fixing it. I'm realizing that when you start fixing things in your house, there is no end of things to do. We were only going to tile the bathroom floor, but now that the molding is off, I've decided to repaint the whole room. The paint is really awful. Sometimes I wonder why people do the things the do. (Mike pointed out that in twenty years, someone might be ripping out the "awful" tile we put in). In addition, they had this terrible wallpaper strip around the top of the room. Yuck. Today, I spent hours peeling it off. I'll be really glad when it's done!! Here are the before pictures of the upstairs bathroom:
Here's the room without any linolium.
And there is the awful blue trim and wallpaper strip.
As most of you know, I'm not much of an interior decorator. I want to be, but I don't think I'm particularly talented in this area. So, we're trying to decided how to paint the bathroom, and I am looking for suggestions. Here is tile we've selected:
And here are some paint ideas that I really like:
Mike's a little worried that the colors are too bold. (He's thinking about when we resell the house in a few years). Any thought? Which one do you like best? Or would you do something else entirely?
Since we had already started on one bathroom, we figured we may as well do the downstairs one while we're at it. Here is it's before picture:
After two days of working all day, and countless trips to home depot, we have made some good progress. I'm just hoping that the after pictures aren't too long in coming!

I like the mulled wine color better than the terracotta color. Did you ever visit the house I lived in Junior year? We painted the living room a similar color to the the first one and I got tired of it after about a week. I always like aqua colors in bathrooms but if you're itching for something different I think you should go for it. You can always repaint if you think it will impact the resale . . .
Yeah, I also like the "mulled wine" better than the funny brown/orange. I think key in deciding on colors would be to consider what your towl/bathroom colors overall are, color of the sink and all. If you're thinking re-sale, it seems to me that earthy colors are always a safe bet. So, considering the color of your tile, maybe some brown/tan colors would be wiser. Dunno. I'm not an expert in these matters either, but I'm sure you could get some good ideas from that home fixing channel (HGTV? shows like Designed to sell etc.?). Good luck!I'm excited to see the after pictures.
I like the orange. It's fun. Whoever buys your house will probably paint it anyway so I'd just make sure you don't use a color that's hard to paint over. I'm excited to see what you choose!
Considering resale, I would tend to go with a more neutral tone on the paint and accessorize with the colors you like. A taupe with white trim is nice, then use your towels, shelving and other things to accent the space. You know how I am not a decorator, but I do know resale of homes. Or as others have said, do what you want then repaint when you want to sell. I think you also have to remember they are smaller spaces, so dark colors will tend to enclose them. I'm just sayin'.....
I can already see this will be a long post. =) Food for you!
1. How much light do you have in there? What times of the day is the light shining in there if you do have a window? This matters tons. This is why dark colors don't work in some areas. Both of the colors you chose are working in the pictures because they are accented with white things, like trim and towels and in the orange they've even mixed it with some brown and gold. Fun stuff. So, tell me about your light.
2. For re-sale, just don't paint every room in your house a different color. And what color are the rooms next to your bathroom? You want something that will look good together when the bathroom door is open. The tile you chose is nice. It will go with anything really.
3. Why is there weird funky blue trim in there?
4. It's a little bathroom doesn't look like it will take that much paint and it can probably handle a bold color...as long as there's some good light in there.
5. Some brands of paint have the little trial sizes that you can buy now to paint a little square on your wall. Get a few and try them out for a few weeks to see what you'd like to live with. In the end it really is worth the extra $$.
6. Ug that border is awful, kudos for getting rid of it. =)
call me if you need anything else. I have the same phone number still.
Kudos for doing this. I still want to rip out vinyl and do some tiling sometime.
I personally like the orange color...the mulled wine is a little to blah for me :)
I'd go terra cotta, but I have that mulled wine-ish color though large portions my house right now and I hate it. :) I'm trying to pick a paint color to cover most of it up... not being super successful on that front yet...
So, I have been thinking about paint lately too. Sherwin-Williams has an awesome FREE paint explorer. You upload your photos, map out the areas you want painted and then select the color you want. It has been helpful for me to visualize and actually see different areas certain colors. Good luck deciding!
